Taffity Family Legacy

Generation 5, Chapter 4
The whole flight home I tried to decide what to say to Isaiah. Part of me certainly felt the impulse to tell him what had happened and let the chips fall where they may...I didn't want to lie to him! But I was sure if I told him he'd be packed and gone before morning - probably move to that island with his dad. And I didn't want to lose him...

Even as I walked in the house, I hadn't made up my mind. Since I'd shaved time off my trip, no one was expecting me home. I heard music coming from upstairs and followed the notes. My mom was on her guitar, my dad was trying his hand at the drums and Isaiah was playing the keyboard with his back to me. Mom saw me first, "Ezri! You're home early!" she said with a smile. Isaiah spun around and before I could even respond he had me in his arms and was kissing me.

I decided then not to tell him. What happened was a total fluke...and it would never ever happen again. There was no reason he ever had to know.

He let go of me sooner than I was ready to let go of him. I tried to hold on but he was kneeling down and reaching behind him. I saw conspiratorial smiles on my parents' faces. "Isaiah?"

"I have a present for you....consider it a very belated birthday present...or a graduation present...or maybe just an 'I love you' present...." Isaiah said. And then he opened up the black velvet box to reveal a gorgeous diamond ring.

"Oh my!" I sputtered, my eyes went wide and my throat dried up. "Is that? I mean..." I croaked out.

"I love you Ezri Rose Taffity, next time you go to Egypt, I want to go with you and I want to be with you forever - will you marry me?" he asked, with a smile on his face.

"Um..." I thought about my indiscretion with Jean in Egypt and knew if I was going to tell him....it should be before I said yes....

"This is where one usually says yes." Isaiah teased. He thought I was just surprised and unable to make words. He had no idea.

"Um....Yes...." I said finally. I DID want to marry him, I just wasn't sure he would want to marry me if he knew the whole truth. He slid the ring on my finger and stood up, kissing me again. My mom was crying happy tears and my dad was smiling. Everyone was so happy; why did I feel horrible inside?

------

Isaiah didn't want to wait; the trip to Egypt and the time apart had really lit a fire under him I guess. My family was all throwing fuel on the fire as they made plans around me. I smiled and nodded through it all. So it happened that only a week later, I was standing in a dress on our back porch with flowers and bubbles all around us - and the wonderful sound of the waterfall cascading down the rocks. The waterfall was the one thing that gave me calm on that day.

"I take thee Ezri, to be my lawfully wedded wife. I promise to love you, cherish you, and honor you for all our days. This ring is a symbol of that unending love; with this ring, I thee wed." Isaiah said as he slid the ring onto my finger.

I took a deep breath and listened to sounds of the waterfall, "I take thee Isaiah, to be my lawfully wedded husband. I promise to love you, cherish you, and honor you for all our days. This ring is a symbol of that unending love; with this ring, I thee wed." I repeated. It was a vow I fully intended to keep from this day forward.

The wedding was lovely; my mom had arranged everything. Since I'd barely returned from a trip and Isaiah had just started a new job, we opted to postpone our honeymoon for now and stayed home. Mom, Dad and Will - on the other hand - decided to schedule a weekend trip on the Haunted Pirate Ship at the same time so we could have the house to ourselves.

For the week following the wedding, I confess we barely even surfaced to eat. Isaiah went to work in the evenings, which is about the only time I saw my family since we were so wrapped up in each other all the rest of the time.

I started waking up feeling nauseous - if I ate a little toast, it went away usually so I told myself it was just because I wasn't eating enough.

That excuse worked for awhile, then I used Isaiah's new job as an excuse. You see, he had taken up a job as a ghost hunter which means he didn't get home until after three in the morning most nights. I'd tried staying up for him but always ended up waking up early the following morning so I wasn't getting much sleep OR eating well. That and his work clothes reeked of science chemicals and such...that could cause nausea no doubt.

I had tried to wash his uniform a couple times but barely made it to the hallway with them before I dropped them on the floor and ran for the bathroom. After that Isaiah told me not to worry about it and took care of his own washing.

But even that excuse didn't last long. I knew, as sure as I knew my name, what the real reason was. I was pregnant...I should have been thrilled. I couldn't wait to have babies with Isaiah.

Only..."Remember that guy I told you about in Egypt?" I whispered into the phone.

"Mmhmm" Kira said groggily, it was only six in the morning when I'd called her. "Wait...do you think it's his??!"

"I don't know...." I blinked back tears as I thought about it. "I mean it was only once and Isaiah and I have been together a lot more...but...it's possible..."

"I should tell him shouldn't I?" I asked.

"You should do no such thing!" Kira said loudly, making me pull the phone from my ear in surprise. "As you said, there is a better than average chance that the baby IS Isaiah's! If you tell him now and the baby is his..."

I heard noise from inside our bedroom and panicked. "I gotta go Kira!" I quickly hung up the phone.

I went over to the drafting table, Kira's words swimming around in my mind. I still thought I ought to tell Isaiah but then there was a pretty high likelihood this baby was Isaiah's....he still never had to know about Jean, about Egypt.

Isaiah put his hand on my shoulder causing me to jump in surprise and put a big streak across my picture. "Did I scare you?" he asked, a small smile on his face.

"Just....startled." I sputtered. "You're up early."

"Mmhmm, need to do a bit of work later and wanted to be sure to spend time with my wife before then." he said, placing a kiss on my cheek. "You fancy a game?" he pointed to the chess table.

We were in the midst of the game when I spoke up, "I need to tell you something..." I said. He looked up at me expectantly. "Um....I'm pretty sure I'm pregnant." I said.

"Really?!" Isaiah was grinning. He jumped out of his chair and pulled me into his arms, spinning me around the room.

I went to the doctor that week to confirm the pregnancy; he even estimated the date of conception as being the day I got home from Egypt....give or take a couple days.

My mom went on a shopping spree the moment I told her I was pregnant - she didn't even wait to find out what I was having. "I think you're having a boy." she said with a nod. And then she bought a ton of boy stuff.

Isaiah wanted a son so he didn't mind. "Well if we don't have a boy, we'll keep it all and use it for the next one...or the next one...or the next one..." he said with a laugh. He was laying in bed next to me with a protective hand on my belly. "But I agree with your mom. That's my son in there...isn't that right little guy" he said to my stomach.

The pregnancy was relatively uneventful. After the stories my mom had told me about our birth and subsequent hospital stay, I was happy with uneventful. The doctor confirmed my mom's guess - we were having a boy. As I entered my third trimester, my back started aching every minute of every day though.

"Three more months of this is going to kill me." I whined.

"Better your back than you babies in the hospital for three months.." Mom said.

"Thanks mom..." I muttered and walked away. I agreed with her but still!

"Wait!" Isaiah called as he came out of the room dressed for work. "I wanted to say good night to my boy." he said, leaning over my belly.

"What about your WIFE?" I said grumpily. He was never home when I went to bed now since ghost hunting wasn't exactly a nine to five job.

"Her too." he said. After he finished talking to the baby, he pulled me into a loving embrace and kiss. "Hopefully I'll be home early." he said softly.

"I'll believe it when I see it." I said with a pout. "But go on...catch your ghosts and all that." I gave him another kiss before giving him a gentle shove toward the stairs.

To my great surprise though, he was home early. I'd just barely started to drift off to sleep when I heard him come in the room and soon he climbed into bed next to me. It was a welcome surprise. "Not enough ghosts tonight?" I asked with sleep in my voice.

"Not to keep me from you." he said, he kissed me and we fell asleep together.

------

I woke up early one morning a couple months later; Isaiah had probably only been asleep for a couple hours. I slipped out of the bedroom quietly and sat down at the drafting table to continue a drawing. The first contractions were small and mostly irritating. I'd been having similar ones for a month now - Braxton Hicks - so I didn't think much of them.

Then I felt a real contraction and nearly broke my pencil in the process. I stood up and started for the bedroom but was stopped in my tracks by another...and another....

Walking made them worse I realized so I ended up screaming for Isaiah...or anyone really. "Aagh!" I gritted my teeth and waited for it to pass before I tried to call out again. "Isaiah!! Wiii-iiiillllllllllllllll-arrghhh"

Isaiah was the first to hear me and make it out to me. "What is i....oh no! Are you?!"

"Yee-eess-gggarr!" I reached out for his arm to support myself...or just to inflicted the same pain on some one else.

It took him a few minutes to finish his freak out and collect himself. I gave him instructions to get my bag, to call the doctor, to tell mom and dad...he ran around doing everything I told him and then carefully helped me downstairs and too the car.

Six and half hours later, two of which were spent pushing, Aragorn Taffity was born; weighing in at 8lbs 2ozs. When they handed him to me the first time, I felt panicked, looking over every inch of him for some indication of who his father was. I so desperately wanted him to be Isaiah's!

We went home the following evening and I still wasn't sure...but watching Isaiah with him, watching him hold him and snuggle him and love him, I realized it didn't matter...not right now anyway. Isaiah was his daddy regardless.
